    OVERTIME RULES

Overtime regulations for the preliminary round
    Does not apply to Round Robin games (Article 9.7.1 (C) – Hockey Québec Rules}

9.7.1 In all tournaments sanctioned by Hockey Québec, where there must be a winner, there will be overtime, as stated hereafter, if the score is tied after the three (3) regular periods of play.

    A) One only five (5) minute period, stop time. A for (4) against four (4) line up plus the goalkeepers will be used (except when penalties must be served in accordance with the playing rules). However, if only one team has lost it’s "Franc Jeu" point (articles 7.7.3 and 7.7.4) it must play shorthanded for the five (5) minute period. (article 7.7.5 (A) page 90). The first goal scored will end the game.

    B) Should the score remain tied after the five (5) minute period, there will be a shoot out as described in article 9.7.2 of Hockey Québec rules.

Shoot Out Article 9.7.2 (Does not apply to Round Robin games)

    A) When this situation occurs, the referee will ask each coach to name three (3) players for the first round of the shoot out. If the score is still tied after this first round, each coach will designate, in turn, one at a time, all players that will participate in the shoot out. All players must participate in the shoot out (with the exception of the goalkeepers) before a player is permitted to return a second time.

    B) A player serving a penalty at the end of the overtime shall be eligible to take part in the shoot out.

    C) The shoot out will proceed as follow:

    a) The home team shall have the choice of shooting first or second.

    b) Once the choice is made, the designated team sends it’s first player to score against the opposing goalkeeper. Then the opposing team does the same until all three (3) designated players of each team have had their turn.

    c) The coach’s choices does not represent the order in which the players must appear at centre ice to take their shot.

    d) Playing rules related to penalty shots apply.

    e) Shots are taken in turn and no simultaneous shots on the two goalkeepers are permitted.

    f) The winning team will be the one having scored the most goals after this first complete round.

    D) When a second (2nd) or third (3rd) round is necessary to break a tie, the order in which the players will appear is at each coach’s discretion and may not be the same as in the previous round. So, in each round, all players taking part in the game must take part in the shoot out (with the exception of the goalkeepers) before a player is permitted to return a second time.

The game ends when the tie is broken following an equal number of shots taken by each team.

OVERTIME PERIOD IN THE SEMI FINAL AND FINAL GAMES

9.7.3 In semi final and final games, where the score is tied after the three (3) regular periods of play, there will be one (1) period of overtime as stated hereafter.

    A) One only ten (10) minute period, stop time, with a four (4) against four (4) players lineup, plus the goalkeepers, except in cases where penalties are applied according to the playing rules. However, if only one team has lost it’s "Franc Jeu" point (articles 7.7.3 and 7.7.4) it must play shorthanded for the first five (5) minutes of the ten (10) minute period. Any player of the offending team can serve the five (5) minute penalty (article 7.7.5 (B), page 90), with the exception of the goalkeeper(s). If that particular team has two or more players serving time penalties, the period will start with five (5) players for the non penalize team, against three (3) players for the penalized team. The first goal scored will end the game.

HANDLING OF PENALTIES IN OVERTIME PERIOD

The handling of penalties in overtime period is different then that of regular time play. Overtime will start as follow: four (4) players against four (4) players for each team, plus the goalkeepers. If a penalty occurs, we will play four (4) players against three (3) players, plus the goalkeepers. If there is a second time penalty to the same team, one player will be added to the non offending team (5 against 3). If the first penalty terminates before a whistle, we will play 5 against 4. At the next whistle, we will play 4 against 3, if the second penalty is not terminated. Please note that this manner of proceeding only applies when a second time penalty is assessed to the same team. In effect, if a third or fourth time penalty is assessed to the same team, those penalties will be delayed.

B) After the overtime period, there will be a shoot out as described in article 9.7.2.
